Sippy Downs taking shape to accommodate student growth

Development is continuing to gain momentum in the knowledge precinct at Sippy Downs with council approving 189 residential units to cater for the growth in student numbers.

The approved complex will house a mix of one, two and three-bedroom dwellings and will provide 237 car park spaces for residents and visitors.

Divisional Councillor Christian Dickson said the project would add to the pool of affordable living opportunities on the Sunshine Coast.

“As outlined in the SEQ Regional Plan, the State Government has estimated that the Sunshine Coast will need an additional 99,300 dwellings by 2040,” Cr Dickson said.

“Our population modelling shows the region can ably accommodate more than the required number of dwellings by 2031.

“Having people living and working in the heart of Sippy Downs will help promote growth for the commercial sector by creating additional demand for services.”

The growth of Sippy Downs is underpinned by the University of the Sunshine Coast and is already attracting a range of residential, commercial office, retail and community facilities.

Cr Dickson said the recently opened new global Youi headquarters marked an important milestone for the new Sippy Downs town centre, complementing the expanding university and surrounding knowledge precinct.

“The Sippy Downs headquarters places Youi in the heart of the developing technology hub and is in close proximity to the university, which will enable them to partner,” he said.

“The combination of planned residential, commercial and civic developments approved by council will help maximise round-the-clock vibrancy and usability of the town centre.

“Our unique ‘university town’ vision for Sippy Downs is now being realised.

“Together, these developments are bringing us closer to realising the vision outlined in the Sippy Downs local area plan.

“I am confident to say that Sippy Downs is steadily becoming a vibrant and active town centre - an ideal place to learn, earn, live and play”.
