Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project Stage Two Commences

The Sunshine Coast Council has officially commenced Stage Two of the Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project, marking a significant milestone in the transformation of one of Queensland’s most beloved coastal destinations. This $42.9 million initiative, rooted in the 2015 Placemaking Mooloolaba Master Plan, aims to enhance public spaces, improve accessibility, and bolster coastal resilience along the Mooloolaba foreshore.

Project Overview

Stage Two, known as the Central Meeting Place, encompasses a comprehensive upgrade of the beachfront area. Key features include:

  • Terraced Seawall: Replacing the aging 1960s rock structure, the new seawall is designed to improve coastal protection while integrating seamlessly with the natural landscape.
  • Enhanced Public Amenities: The project introduces modern facilities, including accessible pathways, an ocean viewing deck, and amenities catering to individuals with high support needs.
  • Expanded Parkland: An increase of 40% in public beachfront parkland is planned, featuring more plants, shade trees, and community spaces for gatherings and recreation.
  • Improved Accessibility: New pathways and better access points to the beach and foreshore aim to make the area more inclusive for all visitors.

Construction is scheduled to begin after the June 2025 school holidays, with completion anticipated by Christmas 2026.

Community Engagement and Support

To support local businesses during the construction period, the Council is offering the first four hours of free undercover parking at the PARKnGO Mooloolaba Central, located less than 300 meters from the foreshore. This initiative aims to encourage continued patronage of local shops, cafes, and restaurants.

Additionally, the Council has established two community reference groups—the Community Stakeholder Interest Group and the Business Activation Group—to facilitate ongoing dialogue and ensure community interests are represented throughout the project's development.

Environmental Considerations

Environmental sustainability is a cornerstone of the revitalisation project. The design of the new seawall incorporates measures to prevent net loss of usable beach area and includes plans for future sand renourishment. Furthermore, the project aims to enhance protection of the foreshore from climate change impacts, ensuring the long-term resilience of the coastline.

The Mooloolaba Foreshore Revitalisation Project represents the largest single investment in community parkland, facilities, and coastal protection in the area over the past 25 years.
